Slang, as McLuhan notes in Culture is Our Business: "is the verbal manifestation of grievance. Slang is an exploration of the new technical and sensory environment that is shifting the speech patterns of the old environment. Slang helps to shape the new identity" (McLuhan 1970: 288).
